Wilmar Sugar owns almost 6600 hectares (ha) of agricultural land within the Herbert, Burdekin, Proserpine and Plane Creek milling regions. Of this total area, we farm 3500ha in the Burdekin, with water supplied from the Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme.
As well as operating our own farms, we lease about 2000ha of land to local cane growers. Of this land, 1300ha is located in the Burdekin and 750ha is located in the Sarina (Plane Creek) area.
Once fully developed, Wilmar Sugar’s self-operated farms will produce more than 500,000 tonnes of cane, with a further 170,000 tonnes coming from our leased farms.
We strive to achieve best-management practices in our farming processes. These include:
- Irrigation scheduling based on soil water content
- Tail water recycling of irrigation water
- Industry-standard nutrient calculation, applying the “Six Easy Steps” guidelines to provide correct nutrient levels and minimise environmental loss of nutrients
Wilmar Sugar owns two cane harvesting groups, both of which harvest about 150,000 tonnes of cane each season (total 300,000 tonnes). Currently, 80,000 tonnes of the cane is sourced from non-Wilmar Sugar farms.
