Our Farm team operates one of Australia’s most advanced sugarcane farming operations. We farm around 6,600 hectares (ha) of agricultural land within the Herbert, Burdekin, Proserpine and Plane Creek milling regions. Of this total area, we farm 3,500ha in the Burdekin, with water supplied from the Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme.
As well as operating our own farms, we lease about 2,000ha of land to local cane growers. Of this land, 1,300ha is located in the Burdekin and 750ha is located in the Sarina (Plane Creek) area.
Our farms produce around 500,000 tonnes of cane for supply to our sugar mills.
We invest heavily in innovation, research and development and continually look for ways to use new technologies and farm practices supporting environmental sustainability, including:
- Irrigation scheduling based on soil water content
- Tail water recycling of irrigation water
- Industry-standard nutrient calculation, applying the “Six Easy Steps” guidelines to provide correct nutrient levels and minimise environmental loss of nutrients
We also own two cane harvesting groups, both of which harvest about 150,000 tonnes of cane each season (total 300,000 tonnes). Currently, 80,000 tonnes of the cane is sourced from non-Wilmar farms.
